r. 22:14 PAUL'S APPOINTMENT: TO SEE AND HEAR FROM JESUS CHRIST

And he said, The God of our :fathers has appointed you

to know his :will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his :mouth.
s, 22:15 Because you shall be a witness for him unto all men of what you have seen and heard.

t. 22:16 CONVERSION OF PAUL
kai nun ti MELleis? a-naSTAS, BAPti-sai [907],
And what shall you donow? arise, andbe baptized,

and wash away your :sins, calling on his :name.
u. 22:17-18 JESUS LEADS PAUL TO SAFETY FROM JERUSALEM

And it came to pass, when I had returned to Jerusalem,

v. 22:19-20 PAUL REMINDS THE LORD OF HIS PERSECUTING PAST

And I said, Lord, THEY know that I was imprisoning

and keeping the garments of them that slew him.

3. 22:22-29 ROMAN CITIZENSHIP USED FOR THE GOSPEL

Ekou-on de auTOU Achri TOUtou tou LOgou; kai ePEran [1869]ten phoNEN auTON, LEgon-tes,
And they gave him audience unto this :word; and they lifted up their :voice, andsaid,
AIre [142] aPO tes ges ton toiOUton: ou gar kaTHEken [2520] auTON zen.
Away with such a fellowfrom the earth: for he is not fit to live.
b. 22:23-24 COLONEL COMMANDS SCOURGING OF PAUL IN LIGHT OF THIS

And as they cried out, and threw off theirgarments, and cast dust into the air,

24the colonel commanded him to be brought into the castle,

bidding that he should be examined by scourging,

that he might know for what cause they so shouted against him.
c. 22:25 PAUL APPEALS TO HIS ROMAN CITIZENSHIP
hos de proEtei-nan [4385] auTON tois hiMAsin, EIpen pros ton heSTOta he-kaTONtar-chon ho PAUlos,
And when they had tied him up with the thongs, :Paul said unto the centurion that stood by,
Ei ANthro-pon 'RoMAIon, kai a-kaTAkri-ton [178], Exe-stin [1832] huMIN maSTIzein [3147]?
Whether is it lawful for you to scourge a Roman [man], and uncondemned?
d. 22:26 THE CENTURION ALERTS THE COLONEL
aKOUsas de ho he-kaTONtar-ches, pro-selTHON to chi-liARcho aPEGgei-len [518], LEgon,
And when the centurion heard it, he went to the colonel andtold him, saying,
Ti MELleis poiEIN? ho gar ANthro-pos HOUtos 'RoMAI-OS es-tin.
What are you about to do? for this :man is a Roman.
e. 22:27a And the colonel came andsaid to him, Tell me, are YOU a Roman?

f. 22:27b And he said, Yes. ho de Ephe, Nai.
g. 22:28a And the colonel answered, With a great sum obtained I this citizenship.

i. 22:29 THE ALARM OF THE COLONEL
euTHEos oun aPEste-san ap' auTOU hoi MELlon-tes auTON a-neTAzein [426]:
They then that were about to examine him straightway departed from him:
kai ho chiLIar-chos de e-phoBEthe [5399] epigNOUS HOti 'RoMAI-OS es-tin, kai HOti auTON en de-deKOS.
and the colonel also was afraid when he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
NOTE: Paul did not always make use of his Roman citizenship to avoid persecution. When he and Silas were in Philippi and brought before Roman leaders, he did not mention this citizenship prior to severe beatings. Apparently Silas also was a Roman citizen. But following their unjust persecution, he didcall on their citizenship, requiring the Roman leaders to come and escort them out of prison and on their way. This would definitely cause the Philippian Roman leaders to be more careful in the future.
It is impossible to read testimonies like Paul's above in the context of the fullNew Covenant and New Testament, and notsee God's Plumbline to evaluate all moral and ethical problems, and howto act in accordance with it.
